Emergency
Preparedness
This month I
would like to offer
suggestions for emergency
preparedness. We live
with the threat of
terrorism, pandemic
outbreaks and natural
disasters. I would like
to share some ideas on
being prepared, offered
by the Homeland Security
Ready America
website.
WATER
TO KEEP ON HAND
* One gallon per person
per day for drinking
& sanitation.
Children, nursing mothers
and
sick people may need
more.
* Store water tightly in
clean plastic containers.
* Keep at least a three
day supply of water per
person.
FOOD
TO KEEP ON HAND
* Keep at least a three
day supply of
non-perishable food per
person. (Foods that
require
no refrigeration,
preparation or cooking,
and little or no water to
prepare)
* Pack eating utensils
and a manual can opener
FIRST
AID KIT SUGGESTIONS
* Two pair of latex or
other sterile gloves
* Sterile dressings
* Cleansing agent
(soap/antibiotic
towelettes)
* Antibiotic ointment
* Burn ointment
* Adhesive bandages
(various sizes)
* Eye wash solution
* Thermometer
* Prescription
medications
* Prescribed medical
supplies such as glucose
and blood pressure
monitoring equipment
* Non prescription drugs
such as aspirin,
anti-diarrhea medication,
antacids
ADDITIONAL
ITEMS TO KEEP ON HAND FOR
EMERGENCY
* Battery powered radio
and weather radio with
tone alert (keep extra
batteries too)
* Flashlight with extra
batteries
* Dust masks
* Wrench or pliers to
turn off utilities
* Important family
documents or
account/policy numbers
for items such as
insurance
policies, bank accounts
etc. Best to keep in
waterproof container
* Sleeping bag or warm
blanket for each person.
* Change of
clothing/shoes
* Household chlorine
bleach and medicine
dropper--when diluted
nine parts water to one
part bleach, bleach can
be used as a
disinfectant. In an
emergency, you can treat
water
with 16 drops of regular
household liquid bleach
to one gallon of water.
Do not use
scented, color safe or
bleach with added
cleaners.
* Plastic and sturdy tape
for covering windows and
doors
* Fire extinguisher
* Matches in a waterproof
container
* Personal hygiene items
* Paper and pencil
* Books, games, puzzles
& other activities
for children
* Cell phone
Remember to plan for
special needs of babies,
children, elderly or
persons with
disabilities. You may
want to consider having a
portable kit
in the event you must
leave your home.
It is important to sit
down and make an
emergency plan that is
specific to the needs of
your family. Your family
may not be together in an
emergency situation, so
include a plan to contact
each other and how and
where you will get back
together.
This article simply
offers a few suggestions.
There may be items listed
that you do not need, and
there may be items not
listed that you would
want to include for your
family.
I would also offer one
idea in the event of a
personal emergency where
you may be unable to
communicate with
emergency personnel. If
you carry a cell phone,
list a contact (the
person you would want
notified if something
happened to you) under
the name ICE (In Case of
Emergency). When the
person responding to your
need sees ICE
on your cell phone
contacts, he or she knows
that is your person to
contact. One word of
warning---a medical or
emergency professional
will not ask your contact
for personal information
on you such as social
security number. They
will only be interested
in informing your contact
of what has happened to
you---if you are being
transported to a
hospital, etc. Therefore,
let your contact know he
or she is listed as your
emergency contact and to
never give out personal
information.
While we all hope we
never have a need for
this information, it
never hurts to spend some
time on preparation in
the event of an
emergency. If you would
like additional
information please visit
the Homeland Security
site at www.ready.gov. Metro also has
a website where you may
learn more about
preparing for
emergencies, which is www.nashville.gov/oem.
As always, please contact
my office at 741-4317 if
I may assist you in any
way.
