Earl
Swensson Associates Lead Effort
for Joelton Elementary
"Village" Needed to
Help Build
New Playground This Saturday
Volunteers of all
skill levels are needed to
partipate in a community work day
to build a new playground for
Joelton Elementary School is this
Saturday, September 22, 2007.
Kids in Motion is a project
spearheaded by the architectural
firm of Earl Swensson Associates
(ESa) working with the Nashville
Alliance for Public Education,
Joelton community members, and
area businesses.

ESa is incorporating the "it
takes a village" concept
into its plans to provide an
improved, safe playground for a
local elementary school by
welcoming all helping hands to
complete the project in one day.
We requested that the
Nashville Alliance provide us a
list of schools that have asked
for a new playground. We visited
all those schools, determined
that Joeltons need is great
and immediate, and were impressed
with the strong parental and
community involvement
there, said ESas
Matthew Fisher, who is chairing
the firms effort. We
feel honored to work with the
Alliance in this effort.
Twelve members
of ESa have worked
vigorously for six months to
design a playground environment
that will stimulate growth and
development. Firms on board to
provide gifts-in-kind and
services include the general
contracting firm Consolidated
Builders, which is helping
prepare for the build date; Bates
Nursery, which has volunteered to
provide plants, trees, landscape
products and pervious paving
materials; and Elements of Play,
a playground equipment firm
providing its equipment at a
discount. A professional from the
playground manufacturer will be
on site September 22 to ensure
proper assembly of the equipment.
Over 30 firms have made monetary
contributions, and a host of
Joelton community members have
made commitments to help with the
actual build.
Pam Garrett, executive director
of the Nashville Alliance for
Public Education, noted,
This project will be
enormously successful because of
the commitment of the folks at
ESa and the hard-working,
supportive Joelton community.
This partnership is an example of
how the Alliance is able to
generate and direct private
resources for the benefit of our
public schools. We are very
grateful for ESa and their
creative approach to this project
that will be both a testament to
their talent and the involvement
of a great community. It makes
such a difference when people
recognize a needand do
something about it.
Being able
to see the actual fruit of our
labor on build day will
be exciting for our team,
says Fisher. Its all
about giving back to the
community, and if we can benefit
these children, who are the
future of the community,
its more than
worthwhile.
ESa, a 46-year-old architectural
firm headquartered in Nashville,
designs healthcare, hospitality,
corporate office, education, and
senior living community projects
across the country and beyond.
